MISSION STATEMENT

Raspberry Ridge is committed to empowering progressive female voices through the art of filmmaking. We seek to tell raw, edgy female-driven stories as written and directed by the women shaping the industry today. We know that women want to see themselves represented as more than cliched stereotypes and at Raspberry Ridge, we know that starts with authentic storytelling. We are dedicated to telling compelling stories with complex and nuanced female characters written by women of all backgrounds, and we aim to be inclusive of minority and marginalized communities, which are often underrepresented both on screen and behind the camera, as we bring these unique and diverse voices into the film industry in Connecticut. While the industry has made strides in increasing women’s representation, we know there is still work to be done – and we are here to do it.

WHY AND WHY NOW

In this post-#MeToo era, it has become glaringly obvious that women’s stories have been overlooked and neglected for far too long. While strides have been made in recent years, too many female characters onscreen are still a manifestation of sexist tropes and unflattering stereotypes. The numbers tell the story: in 2019, women accounted for 51% of moviegoers, yet they only comprised 20% of all directors, writers, and producers and just 34% of all speaking characters. Women, now more than ever, are ready to hear stories that resonate with them and we know that increasing the scope of women onscreen relies on bolstering female voices offscreen as well. At Raspberry Ridge, we are committed to showcasing the full spectrum of women’s experiences, embracing taboo topics and refusing to shy away from the difficult subjects that are essential to understanding what it means to be a woman in today’s society.
